Nature Notes

What a difference a day makes! Yesterday, it was a joy to work in the garden in grand spring sunshine while today (March 16) it is back to winter with a grey sky and a biting cold wind. With the sunshine, a bumblebee was feeding on the nectar of a few tiny winter honeysuckle flowers; while close by a seven spot ladybird seemed to be enjoying the sunshine. I hope that it could find something to eat as aphids (green fly) are their main food and usually appear later in the season. This is the most common ladybird in our gardens but there are many others with more or fewer spots: one type is black with a few red spots. Their grubs I always think of as minute crocodiles as they are a dull dark grey with a few orange spots and three pairs of legs on the thorax. They also feed on aphids.

The daffodils may be late this year, although I do have two flowering in sheltered places, but my crocii are better than usual, and both white and purple hellebores are now flowering. It appears that plants respond more to the longer days than the temperature as the hedge parsley and wild arum (Lords and Ladies) are fast developing their leaves. The tree buds are now swelling and giving a little colour: the orange tinge to the tall poplars when seen in the sunshine against dark clouds looks grand.

Today's coldness makes one wonder if we may yet get a fall of snow in the valley. About two weeks ago when in Hungerford, some shoppers' cars had snow on their roofs so there had been enough snow to settle not far away. At this time of year, hares can sometimes be seen on Spring Hill and other open areas jumping about and thereby living up to their name of Mad March Hares. It is quite a sight if one is lucky enough to see them but they are never as numerous as rabbits who do not exhibit this characteristic. May spring temperatures soon be with us.

Bird Notes

At the beginning of March, we were driving to Hungerford when we saw two Red Kite who were performing a display flight over Furze Hill. This entailed flying close together and then grabbing each other's talons.

I have just had a report of a Wryneck which has been seen towards Seven Bridges. This is a type of Woodpecker whose plumage can only be described as similar to a moth. It was once called a Cuckoo's mate as its call was always heard at the same time as a cuckoo's. Alas, it is very rare now due mainly to the disappearance of pasture and therefore its staple food - ants.

I was recently in a garden in Ramsbury where amongst the birds feeding from the nut dispensers were Siskin and Reed Bunting.

Rainfall

Rainfall for the month to 18 March was 1.48 inches, average 2.09.

Parish Council

The Parish Council has two vacancies that they wish to fill by cooption. The post of Parish Councillor is not an onerous one but it is important that the local community is adequately represented at the Parish level of local government. The post is unremunerated but out of pocket expenses are paid.

If you have a few hours a month to spare and feel that you could serve the community in this way, we would like to hear from you. Age is no barrier but what is required is a lively mind and a desire to work for the good of the community. If you are interested, please contact Sue Arnold, Parish Clerk, Parish Council Office, High Street, Ramsbury, 520045 (ansafone) or email parishcouncil@ramsbury.org

Black Box, Wheelie Bin & Skip Collection

The Black Boxes and GREEN Wheelie Bins will be emptied on Tuesdays 4 and 18 April. The skips for plastic bottles and cardboard will be at the Ramsbury Surgery from 8 am-10.30 am on Wednesday 19 April. The present system of collection of black plastic bags of rubbish will continue on Wednesdays until July.

Waste - New Arrangements

In April, every household will receive a black wheelie bin. PLEASE DO NOT USE IT UNTIL JULY. After the black wheelie bin has been delivered, if you think you will have a problem with its use, call 01380 724911 and KDC's 'Waste Doctor' will call. If you had an assisted 'back door' collection of your black sacks, you will get the same service for your wheelie bin.

Anyone who has not got a black box, can have one free, and can rent a green wheelie bin at £26 per year from KDC.

In April, green wheelie bin collection will change to the same Tuesdays as black boxes in readiness for alternate weekly collections in July. KDC will then collect recyclables from your black boxes one week, and rubbish the next week from your wheelie bin. On recycling days, they will clear as much material as you put out. On rubbish days, only the waste inside your wheelie bin will be taken away.

ADVANCE NOTICES

A ‘Must do’ event takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, 1 May. It is the unmissable walk around the Parish Boundary of Ramsbury with Axford, often across private land. If you cannot arrange a lift to the start, transport will be on hand at 7.45 am from the Tree, or for the not-so-fit to join the walk at one of the refreshment stops. I am sorry that no dogs are allowed. See posters for more details nearer the date. Volunteer drivers and helpers for the refreshment stops would be appreciated. Please contact Sheila Glass on 520409, or any Parish Councillor.

Please do not forget the Ramsbury Closed Golf Competition on Monday 1 May at Marlborough Golf Club. To enter call Robert Osmond on 520568, or Dave Lewis on 520008.

On Saturday 6 May from 9.45 am to 4 pm there is a Bishop’s Award Presentation and Seminar on ‘Caring for God’s Acre’ in the Church Room. It is organised by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust as a Living Churchyard and Cemetery Project. Those attending will principally be interested in the old churchyard but will probably also visit the Burial Ground. It is hoped that the relations of those who are buried there will ensure that the graves have fresh flowers, that dead flowers are removed and that pots are grouped round the headstones so that the grass can be mowed. If you are interested in attending all or part of this event please call Georgie Brooks on 520135.

The Spring Plant Sale will be held at Millstream on Saturday 6 May. Please reserve plants for this event. The coach outing to Kew will be on Saturday 20 May, departing at 9.30 am from The Tree.

Ramsbury Roxy will be showing ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ on May 12 and ‘Some like it hot’ on 26 May.

The AGM of the Community Bus Committee will be held on Tuesday 16 May.

The Summer Lunch Party of the Ramsbury Branch of the Conservative Association will be held at Harbrook House on Sunday 9 July. Please put this date in your diary as tickets will be limited and demand is expected to be heavy. Details of where to buy tickets will be published later.

The date of the Axford Fête is Saturday 29 July.
The Diary is published in paper form, and is incorporated here by kind permission of the Ramsbury Amenity Group.
