Nature Notes

As I was enjoying a grand summer's morning while walking the dog (June 17th), I noticed how beautiful the grasses were looking, cocks-foot with its many anthers ready to shed their pollen, barren brome with its cascading seed heads, while close by was the upright wild oat grass in full flower. At a lower level, there grew a dainty bent grass with its feathery plumes. As a child, I loved the feel of it against my bare legs. In the stream by the Knap, the tall stately Canary reed grass is at present in full flower, while close by the horse radish has sent up a tall flowering spike which has opened out to give many small white flowers. Up stream, the water-crowfoot is flowering but not in the main river as in the past.

We may be enjoying good summer weather but the soil is getting very dry. Nevertheless, the perennials with their roots well down are thriving, both in the gardens and in the hedgerows, giving us a good variety of flowers to enjoy at this season. At the end of May, a bit out of season, I saw several types of fungi - jews ear on elder and on a rotting log, a mass of tiny fairies bonnets (coprinus disseminatus): this can be found from spring to autumn.

Small forms of animal life are now very active: not just slugs and snails but butterflies, speckled wood, red admirals and some whites are on the wing. Also, a few days ago a blue damsel fly with dark circles on its wings was on the chapel wall (agrion I think). As usual, young mammals are getting killed on the roads, and on the A.R.K. river walk, a dead mole was seen with its velvety black coat. In the days when waistcoats were made from mole skins, a great number would have been needed .

Rainfall

Rainfall for the month to18 June was 3.30 inches: average 2.09 inches. This was the highest May rainfall since our records began in 1968.

New Refuse Collections

Alternate Week Collections (AWC) start in July. Ramsbury's Collection Days are now Tuesdays.

July 4th will be the first day when the new black wheelie bins are emptied and AWC starts. Kennet residents have dramatically increased their recycling rate from 9% to 25% in just 18 months and AWC will help to achieve 50%, thereby diverting half of it from landfill. It is a big change for us all, so here is a summary of key events in July for the Whitton Benefice area, including the Parishes of Aldbourne, Axford, Baydon, Chilton Foliat, Mildenhall and Ramsbury.

Event Date
Final black sack collection day Wednesday 28 June
1st Black wheelie bin day Tuesday 4 July
Recycling day for black boxes and green wheelie bins Tuesday 11 July
2nd Black wheelie bin day Tuesday 18 July
Recycling day for black boxes and green wheelie bins Tuesday 25 July

You can remove the tape from your black wheelie bin and start using it after the final plastic sack collection on Wednesday 28 June. The first wheelie bin collection is just six days later. Thereafter the fortnightly alternating cycle starts. Please mark your calendars with these dates.

CARDBOARD AND PLASTIC SKIPS
Next skip dates at the Ramsbury surgery site (from 8 am to 10.30 am) are:
Tuesday 11 July & Tuesday 8 August. Please note the change to Tuesdays in July.

BLACK BOXES
Second black boxes are available from Kennet DC ordered directly or through outlets like Midway Stores in Ramsbury. Fill one box with paper and a second with bottles, cans, textiles and foil. People in this area who live remotely may not yet have a black recycling box - please call Kennet on 01380 724911.

GREEN WHEELIE BINS
Green Wheelie Bins for garden waste are available now for a small annual charge. To order a bin or the new hessian bag option, please call 01380 724911. If you have any green plastic sacks left, please try to use them with the last few remaining black sack collections. Cllr Brian Twigger - Kennet Recycling Champion

Vandalism in the Village

There have recently been several incidents of vandalism in the village, some petty and some which amount to criminal damage. Two of these incidents affected Parish Council property. The playground at Ashley Piece was damaged, safety surfaces removed and equipment broken. The bill will be substantial. The doors on the public conveniences have been gouged with a knife or similar implement and refurbishment will cost several hundred pounds. The funds for the repairs will be taken from the Parish Council precept. Thus, there will be less money to provide amenities such as the recently requested baby swing at Ashley Piece.

Circumstantially, we must assume that the people responsible are connected with, or known to, the groups of young people who regularly congregate at these two places. These children are from the village - they could be YOURS. Where are your children when they are out at night? Ask them. This is YOUR money that is being wasted.

Anyone with information about these or any other incidents can contact the Parish Council in confidence on 520045 or email parishcouncil@ramsbury.org.
