Nature Notes

“Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” seems rather apt this year with the mists of October taking quite a long time to clear some days and the heavy crop of garden fruits and wild berries this autumn. Since there have been no frosts so far, the autumn tints are hardly with us as yet in mid October. But I have noticed it is often November before the beech trees develop their best colours.

The wet days of early October have moistened the warm soil providing ideal conditions for the development of fungi, with toadstools appearing both in the garden and the open countryside. These are not always easy to identify, as I found with a white one that appeared in one of my garden tubs. It was not a mushroom and, despite spending some time with my fungi books, I could not decide to which group it belonged. Once again, I have had a large tuft of honey fungus where a viburnum died last year. Knowing that it can be a serious problem in forest areas, I rang Kennet to ask if I should put it in the black or green bin. The reply was the black one so that the spores would not contaminate the garden material when it is composted. At the end of September, I came upon a large boletus. It could have been the edible penny bun (boletus edulis) but it was the wrong side of the fence for me to break off a piece. This is one of the few in this group that one can eat: all have a sponge-like surface beneath the cap instead of gills.

During the fruit-picking time, I was surprised to see few wasps but it seems to have been quite a good year for butterflies: and on the village walk in early October, numerous red admirals were feeding on ivy flowers. It has also been a good year for dragonflies and damselflies. I usually only notice the blue damsels but the red have also been around. As the days get shorter, badgers and deer are feeding earlier and the animals fall victim to cars as the drivers speed home from work. Oh dear, we will be back to winter - how time flies.

Bird Notes

There were two notables this month: the first was a Raven which flew low over the square. It was being mobbed by a Jackdaw that looked positively miniscule next to its larger cousin. The second was a Peregrine Falcon of which I had a superb view in Bolstridge Bottom. It too was being mobbed: then it plummeted into a hedge where it put some passerines to flight: it then flew straight over my head.

I would like to detour into the insect world. In the last month I have seen a painted lady butterfly and a hummingbird hawkmoth in the village. October 15 was a warm autumn day which brought out large numbers of hornets. A particularly large number were seen in Ewins Hill and Hilldrop.

On October 8, I saw the last of the summer migrants with small groups of House Martins, Swallows and Chiffchaff in the water meadows in Axford. On the same day, some of the first winter migrants arrived in the form of about 50 Redwing near Chilton Foliat. Since then, some large flocks of Fieldfare and Redwing have arrived locally. Other birds which have been seen locally include Green Sandpiper on Ramsbury Manor Lake, Gadwall on the broad water at Chilton Foliat, Red Kite near Chilton Foliat and Stonechat near Aldbourne. A really good month!
