Nature Notes

I fear that the April showers of June are proving rather heavy but at least we have not got floods like the Midlands, although a forked lightning flash heralded the rain on 15 June.

The varied weather is an advantage to some of the wayside plants such as the grasses now in full flower and the mauve flowered mallow, both of which are looking taller than usual. Another mauve flower that I noticed in Loves Lane the other day was probably black horehound, a member of the labiate family, which all have a square stem, and include the dead nettles. The plant is about the same size as the nettles and its flowers occur in whorls around the stem like Jerusalem sage (phlomis).

The willows this year seem to have shed a lot of down which almost looked like snow where it collected by the verge. Also by the Knap Bridge there is an unusual tree which was no doubt planted many years ago, but this is the first year that I have seen a few clusters of white flowers on it. It is the false acacia I believe, also called the locust tree.

As for the animal kingdom, recently I saw a cockchafer on the road with its hind wings showing a little, hit by a car no doubt when in flight. On turning over a small dead moth I found the wings had quite an attractive black and white pattern, suggesting that it was a white banded carpet moth. The weather is causing the butterflies to hide away so perhaps the cabbage whites will lay fewer eggs on the vegetables this summer; although I have found one green caterpillar of the small white on one of my cabbages. The damp suits the snails and slugs but I have only found the normal garden ones when weeding and not the very large slugs I saw when in south Essex a short while ago. Both dead and alive frogs are to be found but have you seen any hedgehogs I wonder?

Bird Notes

This last month has seen a number of Tree Pipits performing their parachute song flight in new areas. Ten years ago, the nearest place to Ramsbury you would have seen them would be in Hens Wood. I have now seen them at the top of Loves Lane, by Pentico Wood and in Bolstridge Bottom.

I have also seen a Cinnabar Moth in Bolstridge Bottom this month. It is vibrant pink when in flight, then when it lands it becomes slate blue. Also in the same area I have seen two very welcome marbled white and painted lady butterflies. Not quite so welcome are the hornets that have been seen around Ramsbury. One of the most enjoyable things I have watched this month was adult Linnets feeding their young, again in Bolstridge Bottom.

Bella Voce Choir

The choir have worked hard in the last few months putting together their new repertoire of music and sang some of the pieces at a recent concert in Chilton Foliat Church. They gave a mixture of religious, classical, modern and gospel music, and shared the evening with a Jazz Trio which joined them for the closing piece of music. This was a very lively number and had the audience clapping along to the music!

They are now going to give a Summer Concert on 6 July at 7.30 p.m. in the Memorial Hall when they will be singing a mixture of songs guaranteed to suit all tastes. There will be a bar and raffle. Tickets are on sale at The Post Office and Midway Stores (for those of you who missed the opportunity to buy at the Street Fair at the end of June). The prices are £5 for adults and £3 for children, and will include a finger supper. The profits from the evening will go to help Childrens’ Health in Madagascar and Ramsbury Pre-School so please help support these two worthy causes by coming along on the 6 July.

The summer term will end on 17 July with a short rehearsal in the Memorial Hall followed by a buffet supper for members of the Choir, at The Crown & Anchor. The Autumn Term will start on 4 September.

ADVANCE NOTICES

The Horticultural Society’s Summer Show will be held from 2 - 4.30 pm in the Memorial Hall on Saturday 11 August. The show schedule is available from the Post Office, on the Horticultural Society pages at www.ramsbury.org/organisations/clubs/horticulture, from Sue Arnold on 520322 or Allan Davison on 520591. Entry details on Friday 10 August will follow in the August Diary.

A special talk has been arranged to help entrants to the Summer Show. It will be held at 7.45 pm in the Memorial Hall on Monday 6 August, when show judge Dave Tucker will give advice and help to all who would like to get the best out of their flowers, vegetables etc. Everyone is welcome.

In 2008, the Ramsbury and Axford Parish Boundary Walk will be held on Sunday 4 May, and not on the Bank Holiday Monday as has been customary. Many walkers have had to go to work or school on the Tuesday after the Bank Holiday and have suffered as a result! Moving the walk to the Sunday will give a day for recuperation.
