Nature Notes

As the weather has been rather variable during the past month, we can but hope June will bring warmer conditions without the strong winds that have torn some of the young leaves and brought down tiny fruits. Since a heavy crop has formed on my bullace tree pruning.

Many shrubs seem to be flowering particularly well this spring; perhaps the colder winter has proved beneficial to them. May and June are the be recently, about twenty were found in quite a small area, including Solomon’s Seal, which was much smaller than the garden variety. Wild and barren strawberries were also in flower. The petals on the latter are more widely spaced, so the green sepals can be se growing fast but also is in flower: to see the detail a hand lens is needed. This season I have realised there are several types of periwinkle both growing wild and in gardens. Their flowers differ in size shape and intensity of colour. I was sorry to see a few Spanish bluebells have appeared in West wood with their stalks thicker and flowers paler than our darker, daintier English ones. The garden ones are usually these imports. Plants brought from other countries for in the long term it seems. The blue flowers at this season include the tiny milkwort of chalk downland and several types of speedwell, often found in our gardens. The smallest is the wall speedwell with intense blue flowers.

On sunny days quite a variety of butterflies should be on the wing. These include the speckled wood, orange tip and gatekeepers.

I was reading that male spiders are larger than the females, so I appeared to have an example of both in the bath this morning, but at a distance from each other.

When approaching a field between two pieces of woodland recently, a roe deer demonstrated how high they can jump. They are usually alone, whereas the larger fallow deer are usually seen in groups.

Bird Notes

With arrival of the Swifts and the Cuckoo the wave of migration is now virtually complete. All these migrant species are now in a frantic programme of forming pairs, building nests, laying eggs and rearing chicks. They have to achieve in five months what our resident species do in seven or eight.

I have been keeping an eye on a pair of Chaffinches as they build up their exquisite cup nest, lined with wool, hair and feathers, bound together with spider’s web. They are not visiting the garden much, as at this time of year they feed almost exclusively on insects, close to their nests. The Greenfinches continue with their seed diet and often visit the garden in gangs, as they range further afield to keep their mates, and young, supplied with food.

Special treats of the month have included a Whitethroat and a Blackcap seen on the Spring Kennet walk. It is also the time of year to award the ‘supercute’ prize, and for me it is a three way tie between the baby Robin on the patio (face to face with our dog), the days Galloway calf at the other end of the village. I hope they all have a good summer.
