Nature Notes

By the middle of February I am sure we were all expecting to be enjoying better weather - no such luck it seems. Perhaps March will bring some pleasant sunshine since it has been in short supply of late. At present we are still getting bitterly cold winds. I went on the Flyer to Newbury last week and wondered who would be a market trader on such days? One thing to be grateful for is that most days have just about remained dry. Even if some of us are longing for some gardening weather, at least the soil has thawed so root vegetables can be lifted and brussels are no longer frozen.

Now the days are getting longer the snowdrops are flowering and the aconites, with a little sunshine, will open wide their petals. Hazel catkins can now be found and these go well with daffodils in a vase. I notice the birds are singing more, including skylarks which I saw and heard when on the open down today. The other day a thrush was in the garden; the reason no doubt for the empty snail shells I have seen recently. The mammals are getting more active, so while driving to Hungerford recently, I had to slow as two roe deer crossed the road to the water meadow. The week before a dead one was by the road side near Bedwyn Common, hit by a car no doubt. They are usually seen in ones and twos, whereas fallow deer are, for the most, seen as a small herd. They can often be seen in the wood near Littlecote and Membury Fort. Grey squirrels are around, but these hardy little creatures only hide away when the weather is particularly inhospitable.

Soon we must be on the lookout for the first early flying butterflies, then we will really feel spring is coming upon us.

Bird Notes

For us, March usually qualifies as the early part of spring, and a change in bird life is already evident. More and more birds are singing and the foraging on new bud growth has started. Bullfinches have been sighted in gardens and in the High Street, presumably on their way to strip a fruit tree branch of early buds. I have already seen crows with beaks full of twigs to start early nest building, and the long-tailed tits seem to be sizing up the best moss to start their construction programffme.

Sighting of the month was our first visit to the Somerset levels to see the starlings roosting at dusk. This has to be seen to be believed. For nearly an hour, the balletic hordes poured in, until there were over two million (so we were told – difficult to count) in the reed beds in front of us. The ‘murmuration’ was almost deafening. Highly recommended!

Rainfall

Rainfall for the month to 17 February was 2.45 inches, average 2.15 inches.
