The pre-medieval village was a most important centre for the area and a connection with the past is maintained by the modern Bishop of Ramsbury.

Today's community of some 1,500 people boasts a thriving primary school, a large surgery, many shops and a wide range of services.

There is a good variety of local employment and there are excellent road and rail connections to Bristol, London and beyond. The manor lake and large water meadow areas provide a unique habitat for many forms of wildlife whilst the village community offers many social and leisure facilities. The bi-annual street fair is just one traditional event in a crowded calendar, including an annual ball, flower shows, art exhibitions

The Recreation Centre is one of the finest in the area boasting a large tennis tennis club with all-weather, night and day courts, a thriving junior and senior football club, cricket club, bowls club as well as supporting many minority activities. A major expansion of these already impressive facilities is now underway.

Local groups and societies cater for the most diverse tastes including indoor games, dramatics, arts and crafts, music, scouts and guides, country sports and horse riding - or you can just enjoy walking in the beautiful downland.
