History
Thirty years ago a handful of interested people
got together with a view to reviving live theatre in Ramsbury and
the Ravensbury Players were born. There were no funds but all contributed
a small amount of money in order to get the first production off
the ground.
The first production "I'll get my Man" by
Phillip King was a success and the Memorial Hall was filled for
three nights. Since those early days, over 60 productions have
been presented. Over the years the Ravensbury Players have progressed,
giving the village a taste of comedy, thrillers, dramas and farces
ranging from period plays to present day; from Priestly and Coward
to modern-day Ayckbourn.
In recent years the Players have succeeded
in attracting a number of talented young people and in Jubilee
Year, this enabled the Players to widen their scope and present "Crown
Matrimonial" by Royce Ryton.
The momentum has continued with
productions of “Murdered to Death” by Peter Gordon, “Rebecca” by
Daphne du Maurier, “Flare Path” by Terrence Rattigan
and in 2006 “Tons of Money” by Will Evans and Valentine. |
Aim
The aim of the Players is to bring together everyone with an interest
in drama by providing a taste of live theatre for the enjoyment
of all. The Players are made up of approximately 40 members ranging
in age from 18 to over 70, living within the village and its surroundings.
Not all of them wish to act but help in many other ways such as
Front of House, Stage Management, Wardrobe, Catering, scene building,
lighting, sound, makeup and many more.
The Players present a varied programme of
material and provide the village with enjoyment, entertainment
and drama. This requires resourcefulness but at the same time is
extremely rewarding as it involves team effort to make it work.
Productions are held twice yearly in the Memorial
Hall. In April the Players usually put on a selection of one act
plays with supper. The main production takes place in November
in the form of a two or three Act play.
Plays are chosen from a series of play readings
held at various members houses. Our November 2004 production was "Rebecca" by
Daphne Du Maurier running for four nights. |
